Karen Four

"Friendly 246, we're across from the Wendy's and Aldi's." Crew member of Southern Airways Express flight after performing an emergency landing on a Virginia highway.

"Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit." Pilot in Command Karen Sorenson. An Intrusion of Trifles, release date March 2024.

I'm sure you have some questions. Many of them might be related to the eternal 5W's and an H. You know - who, what, where, and all of that. It is akin to the Miracle on the Hudson, only the captain was not Sully and they didn't land in the Hudson.

Instead, two pilots managed to turn the failure of their single engine just after takeoff, which even this non-pilot knows is a critical phase of a flight, into an upright landing in a snowstorm on a public roadway. They had five passengers aboard, who deplaned with a story to tell but not a scratch on them.

Ultimately, the FAA will decide why this crew had to choose a busy freeway rather than the intended runway in Lancaster (Lank-ister), PA. The fact that they did so successfully, while in the process avoiding traffic, power lines and towers, roadway signs and signals... It's a testament to how well trained the average commercial pilot is, because they are flying for a small operation that doesn't pay a substantial amount of money. Neither of them are Chuck Yeager - especially the woman pilot coolly handling the radio exchanges with ATC.

An Intrusion of Trifles begins with just such a dilemma dropped in the lap of Karen Sorenson, former detective and now new Cessna 208 Bravo pilot, working for a small charter outfit. How does she do?

You'll have that, and many other questions answered this March.
